Lost pasword on OSX

This can be a little tricky (depending on OSX version)

Normally you can just boot from a OSX CD and use the Password option in the menu….but if you have no disk then read below.

At boot prompt specify -s (or hold down command-s) To get into single user mode.

Now Pre 10.3 all you need to do is
/sbin/fsck -fy
/sbin/mount -uw /
passwd [username]

10.3 and above you need to do the following before running passwd

/usr/libexec/register_mach_bootstrap_servers /etc/mach_init.d
cd /var/db/netinfo
netinfod -s local
SystemStarter

Another nifty command here is niutil -list . /users (watch the space between . and /)
